6. Save the internet

Web is horizontal and egalitarian (Tim Berners-Lee) As such, the web did huge amount of damage to corporate infrastructure - compuserve, aol, BT Gold

There have been three attempts by the enemies of the net to destroy it.

1. Dotcom boom - paywalls - private islands 1995-2000 - failed

Bizarre recent attempts by Murdoch - car-crash of the Times website New attempt - Murdoch's ipad newspaper http://visionon.tv/group/control_panel/manage?p_p_id=31&p_p_lifecycle=0&p_p_state=maximized&p_p_mode=view&doAsGroupId=10156&refererPlid=10159&_31_struts_action=%2Fimage_gallery%2Fview&_31_folderId=31688

"like a paywalled site, it expects us to pay for something that is actually less useful and valuable than the free competition." Scott Rosenberg http://www.wordyard.com/2010/11/21/why-the-daily-murdochs-tablet-newspaper-will-be-doa/

2. DRM - failed. Also killed by the widespread success of open source. 2004 - 2009

3. Legislation / net neutrality 2009 -

Which is why we need viable and thriving open infrastructure -

P2P - more legitimate uses with creative commons is therefore very important

Another (related) problem:

http://www.google.com/images?q=hamster+cage&biw=971&bih=534

Dave Winer - hamster cages, like facebook - FB is the human owner - facebook

"They make a wide variety of colorful and fun cages for hamsters that are designed to keep the hamster, and their human owners, entertained for hours. When you get tired of one, you can buy another. It's looks great until you realize one day, that you can't get out! That's the whole point of a cage."

"Stuck in twitter, like the frog in boiling water."

The issue for geeks is that (OUR FINAL DAVE WINER QUOTE!) "The enemy of progress is complexity." if we want to escape from the closed source world.

"The only way to get what we want is to make the stuff work the way we want it to work. We can't wait for Silicon Valley to do that for us, because they will never do it. It's not in their nature." (Dave Winer)

WE WOULD LIKE TO ADD SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT TO THAT At the same time, as developers you can't make what YOU want. You have to be talking to journalists and film makers and collaborating on building what they want. If you're building your own thing, your tools will likely be useless as both film making and journalism are craft skills with long apprenticeships.

Alternative is you can come and work for the open media for a very small wage, or in your spare time. [this is phrased wrongly]

Before we tell you how to do that, let's watch a film - we were recently awarded damages by the Kent Police.......

What did the po;lice take from you

The open video scripting challenge

We would like to build exemplar projects to use in our open media project (http://visionon.tv)

1, Rss in and out aggregator

2. Badges to drive mission completion and trust networks

3. Document how to create / install an open source media player with media rss playlist.

RSS in and out by multi tagging#

Can query a site for an RSS feed based on a tag rather than the whole site. Can create an RSS feed from a tag query rather than the whole site Thus can by boolean logic automate feeds in and out of each site's articles to query a site for an RSS feed based on a tag rather than the whole site. This is key as it empowers the producer rather than the techie at the centre to influence where the content ends up.

Let's show visionon.tv or at least talk about it as something which empowers the user)

Tec notes Can do real-time scaling with Pub Sub Hubbub, fat pings and RSS feed timed caching (queries are only updated once every set time period) Of course, this falls back to simple site RSS for the whole web of non “compliant” sites, means some one has to put more effort into sorting them.

Badges (going to leave this to one side for now)

The media player is important as we have tried and failed to use this technology so there is a clear need for good documentation on a HOW TO and a demonstration of use in the world of news.
